Future of Malaysia: Islamic? Secular???

Posted: July 21, 2007 in Freedom of Speech, Society

The blogosphere has been pouring with news and updates on the Islamic state debate since Monday. From those reporting on their fears of it truly being Islamic to those shouting foul to the statements made by Najib on the Islamic state to Malaysia and even to Hishamuddin Hussein warning to the MCA to quieten down or else…

So what is truly happening? Why is the government refusing to react or acknowledge there is an issue that needs to be addressed? When I read Hishamuddin Hussein (remember the keris guy) remark to MCA or shall I say stern warning in the Berita Harian I was rather pissed and frankly speaking I do not even support any particular political party but I felt his warning or remark was totally unwarranted. This is a glimpse of what he said;

Wohooo..Amaran!!! Are you scared? You should be very scared. Hishamuddin has spoken!!!

Ok for those of you who do not understand the language he basically stated that MCA better watch out and stop making comments on the Islamic State debate which is only going to cause negative reactions and no benefits. He further added that he is not a naive leader and will not stand by to such statements made by MCA and will not allow it to continue.

I mean come on, you say sit, I sit ah???

The reactions that he and probably his party SHOULD worry is about the fact that the ‘rakyat’ especially those of us non-muslims will fear and worry about continued rule of the country by BN with this sort of remark being aired by those in power. Why blame,warn MCA? It’s is not wrong for them to question such remarks especially if it is potentially harming to the ‘rakyat’?

But in my opinion, the government should stop telling the ‘rakyat’ what to do, what to say. I do belief that people have to be responsible in what they say but so far what I have read shows proof to Malaysia being a secular state and say nothing of it being an Islamic state unless those in power are trying to change things..change the constitution. If that is the case, it a whole different ball game altogether!

I really wonder how Barisan Nasional can function when they are not united under one umbrella when the parties under the same coalition cannot even agree to what kind of state is Malaysia. How can they behave as though they are cooperating with each other for the same goal and vision- for the good of the ‘rakyat’ when each day we see proof of that crashing down?Makes me wonder if the coalition is for benefit of rakyat or benefit of individual parties merely for political gain rather than ‘rakyat gain’..I guess we all know the answer to that.. term friends for benefits in this case coalition for benefits..

So are we secular? Islamic??????? NO NO! No more talk on that! We must just wait and see how I dear country wishes to reflect in their own time and way of course.

Read the articles below to see what these people have said in relation to Hishammudin’s comment;

Shut up MCA!
